A Spar is Born!

The future looks bright for the new to industry Spar in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. The newly completed 243sqm store embraces the latest energy saving technologies and is fully equipped with everything a convenience store shopper would need, and more.
What was once a Kwik-Fit car workshop and sat dormant for 11 years has been lovingly restored by The Jordon Group into a modern, spacious shopping dream. This brand new Spar is kind to the environment and is sure to be a hit with the local residents.
Owner Nigel Shorthouse has worked in the retail industry for over 30 years and it really shows. This is his first store which he had planned to perfection prior to the build and due to his lengthy retail experience expectations were naturally very high.
“I have been planning this store for 18 months now. I knew this was a great spot because it’s the only shop this side of the river (in Bridgnorth centre). There’s a huge car park and it’s what shoppers want these days, they don’t want to go into the town centre and walk”.
A lot of building work had to be done but this didn’t deter Nigel. The biggest problem was changing the look of the store from a Kwik-Fit into a Spar. To do this the two folding metal shutters along the side of the building were encased and hidden to give the appearance of a wall and an auto door fitted at the front of the building to create the new entrance.
The large open floor space inside had to reflect that of a convenience store. Internal walls were built, cladded and plastered six times to create strength and the entirety was insulated. Space was left open in the back for receiving goods in and out and for placement of the cold room.

The in-store bakery was built and ultra modern equipment installed, ceramic floor tiles fitted for durability and visual appeal, lighting and electrics, signage, air conditioning, shelving and refrigeration all installed and fitted with precision.
Owner Nigel wanted the highest quality, most energy efficient equipment in his store. All equipment used by The Jordon Group is ECA approved and installed by F Gas certified engineers. Being main UK distributers of market leaders "Arneg Refrigeration", imported directly from Italy, The Jordon Group recommended their products. The most popular Arneg Panama 2 was used in varying sizes and finishes to create a stunning looking dairy display for milk, cooked meats and cheeses, ready meals, desserts, soft drinks and local produce. Arneg’s shelving system “AMX-35” was also used for quality, durability and affordability. Jordon’s Glass Double Door Freezer JRX-1300-NV was installed with LED lighting to maximise visibility for the consumer whilst lowering energy costs.
One of the most crucial elements for Nigel during the build was adhering to the building regulations. The problem he faced was the need to keep noise to a minimum due to the close proximity of the residents. Although the ECA approved condensing units are low noise, Nigel wanted to be 100% certain he would not upset the residents. The Jordon Group’s solution was to install a heavy duty extraction unit, reducing noise levels to an absolute minimum without interfering with the condensing units. This greatly benefited Owner Nigel and meant that he could maintain the 5 year warranty on his J&E Halls’ condensers, reduce carbon footprint and adhere to the building regulations at the same time.
After the successful opening of his first store, Nigel reflects on the hard work that was involved from start to finish…
“I was on-site the whole time working alongside the team step by step and it went perfectly. There was a slight hiccup with the tiling but Jordon’s’ sorted it out and the job was finished two days earlier than planned. The lads showed great workmanship and gelled together very well. They worked exactly to schedule and they even cleaned up after themselves! I’ve got more plans for the store too - like a cash machine and a greater selection of convenience food which will hopefully bring in more customers. I’m so happy with my new store and will definitely be using Jordon’s’ again in the future”.
Mr. Shorthouse is already planning his next store and looks forward to his bright future.
