Be it a sun-drenched barbeque or a tense football gathering, the need for beer and lager will always be on the menu. So with the correct range on display, business could be flowing for convenience retailers.
Despite the cash strapped times people will always enjoy a relaxing drink. The beer and lager market is on the increase and currently worth £3.59billion, with sales up two per cent in volume and three per cent in value year on year.
With the summer months just around the corner it is essential that retailers make the most of their beer and lager offering to give shoppers the refreshment they want.
Three quarters of shoppers will drink their beer on the same day it is purchased and half of those within two hours. People who normally buy from convenience stores are on their way out to a social occasion and require cold beer at the right size for carrying.
Research shows that 60 per cent of beer sales take place on a Friday or Saturday between 4pm and 9pm so stores need to make sure their chillers are fully stocked between these times.
Retailers should be aware of new brands and innovations that bring in more shoppers and increase frequency of purchase, such as world beers. While stocking big brands is key, it is worth being aware that beers like Peroni and San Miguel are the fastest growing category in the UK with sales up 17 per cent in volume.
With key sales opportunities nearly upon us such as the FA cup final on May 14th and the second May bank holiday from May 28th to 30th it would be a crime for retailers to miss out.
David Scott, director of customer marketing at Carlsberg UK says, “Carlsberg is investing $2.5million in chilled beer in the next 12 months. An in-store chiller is likely to attract four times more footfall than an ambient fixture-but retailers are not grasping the opportunity”.
