Costcutter Rendlesham, Suffolk

Rendlesham in Suffolk is a small village which until the mid 1990's was an RAF American air base and is still actually known locally as RAF Bentwaters.

When the base closed in the 90's, leaving just 400 RAF homes on site, housing developers moved in and commenced building new housing. Currently, there are now 1700 new homes on site.

Seven years ago and with the support of Costcutter, Mr and Mrs Rosser moved into and converted what was the American Burger Bar in Rendlesham village, into the 2,300 sq ft supermarket they trade from today. The local post office was also purchased and brought into the new shop and from a standing start in September 2004 the supermarket has grown in line with the village. Last year the turnover reached 1.5 million and is on course this year to achieve 1.6million.

The store was completely refurbished by the Jordon Group in November 2011 and has received a fantastic response from its customers seeing an increase in turnover and footfall. Turnover is up 8% ahead of last year since the refit in November and is set to continue rising year on year. Owner Mrs Rosser is delighted with the results and the Jordon Group.

She comments, "We've seen a fantastic transformation of the store . In particular the off license , the low island dairy case and the new super bright microlights which have completely transformed the place. Sales are 8% ahead of the same period last year. Thanks to the professional way in which the shop fitting and merchandising teams brought it all together".

Here are some of the important things to keep in mind when you are planning a retail sales and display area that will maximise visual impact and most importantly - sales!

The style of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment you install will depend on climatic conditions in your area, the size of your retail space, and whether temperature control is needed to preserve the shelf life of stock.

Arneg Launches Osaka

SAFEcontractor Accredited

The Jordon Group is one of the latest successful companies to join a leading edge scheme, designed to help industry improve its safety record.

The Jordon Group, based in Lancashire recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practise amongst UK contractors.

Employing 65 people, the Jordon Group is principally involved in Shopfitting solutions - housing its own team of expert joiners; and the installation, service and maintenance of Commercial Refrigeration and Air Conditioning services.

Specialising in the Construction and HVAC industries and with a £10 million turnover, the Jordon Group’s most recent clients have included major players such as Costcutter, Londis, Spar, Nisa-today’s, Mace, the Perfume Shop and the Post Office.

Managing Director Paul Jordon commented, “At the Jordon Group we’re committed to delivering the highest levels of safety standards and quality. We feel this accreditation further affirms our dedication to excellence in all aspects of our business practice.”

Penny Petroleum Service Station-Alloa Scotland

We are proud to announce the completion of a new Penny Petroleum development in Alloa, Scotland. From what was once an ex-showroom and offices has now been lovingly restored to what it is today - an ultra modern petroleum forecourt with plush seating area.

Owner, David Penny carefully planned the store layout and design with Jordon's Retail Design Consultant, Graham Fraser. Penny wanted a much higher specification of refit than Penny Petroleum have previously done in the past and had the idea for a comfortable relaxation area for his customers. From his specification, Fraser put together a tailor made CAD design of the store and schedule of works.

Work commenced removing internal walls to create a sales area of 153 square metres. Drop ceilings were fitted to create features over the refrigeration, the counter area and the seating area.

Following this came the fitting of a new porcelain floor, a suspended ceiling with a high specification lighting layout, a low height island chiller and upright freezers.

For ease of entrance for the customers, automatic sliding doors were fitted and new window sections toward the front of the store to enable light to flow through.

After completion of the project and opening of the site, David Penny commented, "I'm really happy with the new image. I wanted a much higher specification than we usually have and that is definitely what Jordon's have acheived. I now intend to replicate this on future projects".

The Jordon Group are currently designing future projects alongside Penny Petroleum and look forward to working with them again in the very near future.

Londis Bromley

The Jordon Group are delighted to announce the opening of a new Londis store. The entire redevelopment was completed by the Jordon Group to transform what was once a run down video rental store into this ultra modern convenience store in the London Borough of Bromley.

Store owner Mr. Patel commented, " I am thrilled with the look of my new store, it has totally exceeded my expectations. Jordon's were great, very professional and efficient".

Mr Patel worked closely with his Retail Design Consultant Steve Harris throughout the project. Carefully planning the layout of the store, lighting, energy efficient equipment, shelving, flooring, counter, ceilings, plumbing, signage and security systems. The tailor made package and schedule was put together and work commenced on this entire shop fit.

Following the recent opening of his new Londis Convenience Store on Randlesdown Road in Bromley, Mr. Patel gushed, " the customers love it, they keep commenting on how good it looks and how handy it is that they now have a local store. I have been very busy since the day we opened and sales figures are exceeding the forecasted already. I'd like to thank Jordon's for all their hard work and getting the store opened for me so fast".

Retrofit Doors-Refrigeration

Are you tired of ever increasing energy bills? Literally fear the bill dropping through the door and can't imagine where such figures came from?

Here at the Jordon Group we know how stressful things can get without the worry of soaring energy costs. That's why we're letting you into a little secret... the biggest energy saving a convenience retailer can make is to put doors on your chillers.

Retrofit doors on chillers have become big business in the industry over the past year. By fitting doors to your chillers you can save up to a quarter on your refrigeration costs, and when you take into account that refrigeration makes up 60% of the average store's power use, that's money worth saving.

The doors can be hinged doors opening outwards towards the customer, or sliding. With hinged doors it is important to have enough isle space as open doors take 40cm. If space is a problem in your store then sliding doors maybe a better solution.

After the decision of door choice has been made, you may then want to consider LED lighting. This again will save energy costs (see our story on LED lighting) and also provide greater illumination as fitting doors to chillers will reduce ambient light by 20%.

Costcutter owner, Jane Parsons at the Old School Store in Woebley had doors fitted to her chillers. "We had had the doors fitted in January 2012 and we have seen great energy savings already. We have calculated that we're saving £8 per metre of refrigeration per day. We have 8 metres which equals £64 saving per day, £448 per week. This is absolutely fantastic during the winter period as we're expecting greater savings during the summer when the cabinets have to work harder. The customers also love them, they keep asking if we've had new chillers! The doors are top quality, i'm very impressed by the way they softly slide closed and lock half way in order to easily re-stock them".

The benefits are not just cost saving, doors on chillers make shopping a better experience for customers. No longer will your store be ice cold due to open fronted chillers expelling cold air, your store will remain at an ambient temperature - pleasant to shop. Products also benefit from a longer shelf life thanks to chiller doors. There is less waste as food products are kept at an optimum temperature.

If you decide that chiller doors are the way forward for your store, then you need to decide on whether to retrofit your existing chillers, or go the whole hog and install new chillers with doors. Ultimately, it comes down to how old your equipment is. If your chiller is over eight years old, you may need to think about changing the whole case.

Introducing doors to your chillers can seem daunting, but in the long-run you can save thousands. "This is the quickest, fastest way to save money", says General Manager Alan Barwick. "It's good for the pocket, the planet, and the product is a case of sooner done, sooner saved."

Handford Service Station

The Jordon Group - Charity Work

As a company, we continually provide help to worthy causes where we can. We have helped many charities to date, including Macmillan, The Christie cancer care hospital and Dr Kershaws Hospice Oldham to name but a few.

This time we chose to help Children in Need and Tree House children's unit at Stepping Hill Hospital.

For Children in Need we had a "bake off" where our very kind members of staff donned their pinnies and baked the most delicious cup cakes to be sold at our head office in Oldham! The money we raised was then donated to Children in Need.

For the Tree House children's unit at Stepping Hill Hospital, one of our staff members joined his residents' association in Woodley, Greater Manchester and raised more than £400 with a carol singing expedition over Christmas. The residents association first started singing and collecting donations for the Tree House children's unit in 1999. Since then they have raised £4,045 and have helped to purchase vital pieces of equipment for the children's unit.

This year the monies raised helped buy new Apnoea alarms for the wards which are monitors that alert when any small baby stops breathing for a short period of time.

Our fund raising work continues throughout 2012 and we hope to make a small difference to those less fortunate.

New Year, New Store?

Why not start the New Year with a new look for your store?

VALUE for money will be the buzzword for independent retailers in 2012 as the financial climate remains difficult. But the catalogue of major events due over the next 12 months - from the Queen's Diamond Jubilee including an official Jubilee Weekend on 2nd - 5th June to the London Olympics - will present a fantastic opportunity for store owners to boost sales despite the economy.

People are said to be shopping locally and more often in order to keep spending under control, and with tobacco displays in supermarkets over 3,000sq ft due to be outlawed from April, convenience stores should be able to attract new customers.

So why not cash in on this opportunity and really 'wow' your customers. Retailers need to look at all aspects of their business model, take a fresh look at the store through the consumers eye and make some positive changes.
